Soft Newborn Crochet Hat Pattern

Featured image placeholder: warm gray newborn crochet hat folded on ivory cotton with muted peach ribbon nearby.

This soft newborn hat uses a simple double crochet crown and a folded ribbed brim. It is intended as a handmade gift size for many newborn photo or coming-home moments, but head sizes vary. The most useful measurement is the finished circumference after the hat has relaxed.

Supplies

  • 80 to 100 yd DK or light worsted yarn
  • 4.0 mm crochet hook, or hook needed for gauge
  • Stitch marker, tapestry needle, scissors

Gauge and finished size

Gauge: 15 dc and 8 rounds = 4 in. Finished hat circumference: about 13 to 14 in with gentle stretch. Finished height before folding brim: about 6 in. Sizing assumption: newborn gift size, not medical or hospital sizing.

Abbreviations

ch = chain, sl st = slip stitch, dc = double crochet, fpdc = front post double crochet, bpdc = back post double crochet, st = stitch.

Finishing and use

Weave in every end carefully on the inside. Check that the brim is not tight and that the hat can be removed easily. This project is a handmade accessory and should be used with caregiver judgment and supervision. Do not add pom poms, cords, buttons, beads, or long ties for infant use.
